    Presentation:

Hyperion Ensemble is a group of interpreters and composers having for declared aim the development of a new aesthetic program - prefiguring a new avangarde in music, whose main definition is - spectrality.

Hyperion Ensemble was founded in 1976 by the composer Iancu Dumitrescu. Initially, Hyperion suggested underlining possible connections between the orgins, the most archaic Romanian music - Byzantine music, folklore collected by Bartok, etc. - and today's avangarde music , represented then by a group of innovative composers.

Reneuwed once more today, Hyperion recreates a new avant-garde, removing any pre-conceptions, as a provocation of the spirit, in quest of new domains - terrae incognitae - of the sound.

The activity of "Hyperion" is found in a many recordings and concerts all over Europe - in Vienna (Musikverein), Paris (Radio France several times) London (Royal Festival Hall), Lisbon (Goulbenkian foundation) Nice (Festival MANCA) Allicante, Vitoria, Lerida, Rotterdam, Peruggia, Utrecht, Rome, Chartres, Orleans, Nancy, Belgrade, etc.

Hyperion has recordednumerous LPs and 20 compact discs, dedicated to the music of Iancu Dumitrescu and Ana-Maria Avram.

PRESS fragments:

"... Few days before these recitals, the public of Nice had been hardly intrigued - but completely seduced - by the venue of Hyperion Ensemble, directed by Iancu DUMITRESCU. Main organ of the current musical creation in Romania, this ensemble testifies, in its orientations, of the research for a synthesis Orient-Occident. It developed the practice of the collective improvisation, the intuitive musics, and the reference to the harmony of the natural spectrum ". (...) Gérard Condé, Le Monde - Paris - Tuesday, February 19, 1985.

"... However, both most striking works of the Rumanian evenings of Wednesday and Thursday, when Hyperion Ensemble from Bucharest performed, were a Dumitrescu's work for three double- basses and percussions, in which, in the middle of a spectacular movement of bows, pizzicatos and harmonic sounds, one was seduced by the internal beauty of the sound climate..." André Breton "Midi Matin", Nice 1985

As a chief of Hyperion Ensemble he founded in 1976 and which he conducts since, together ensemble which includes one of the most brilliant instrumentalists of Rumania, Iancu Dumitrescu made known in all Europe not only his most significant works, but still those of his colleagues representing the wheeling and forward-looking flank of the Romanian School". Harry Halbreich "Le Monde de la Musique", Paris, 1985
