Georgian baritone Lado Ataneli studied at the State Academy of Music in his hometown of Tiflis. In 1989, he made his debut in Un Ballo in Maschera (Renato) at the NATIONAL THEATRE TIFLIS. In 1991, he won the first prize and the Grand Prix at the international Francisco-Vinas-competition in Barcelona. He repeated this success at other singing competitions all over Europe, such as the international event "I Cestelli" of the Italian opera in Cologne in 1996, and the 15th Belvedere competition in Vienna, at both of which he came first.

In 1996, the artist began his international guest performance career at the FINNISH NATIONAL OPERA HELSINKI in Tosca (Scarpia), followed by debuts at the DEUTSCHE OPER BERLIN with Tosca (Scarpia) and at the KLANGBOGEN WIEN in Shakespeare in der Musik (Macbeth and Falstaff) with the Orchestra Royal Opera Covent Garden. The highlight of his guest performances was the title part in Macbeth at the TEATRO ALLA SCALA DI MILANO. After his debut at the WIENER STAATSOPER in Tosca (Scarpia); Lado Ataneli also made his debut at the HAMBURGISCHE STAATSOPER in Otello (Jago) and at the STADTTHEATER BERN, also in Otello (Jago). In 1998 he returned to the HAMBURGISCHE STAATSOPER with the productions of Cavalleria Rusticana (Alfio)/I Pagliacci(Tonio) and La Forza del Destino (Carlo) NEW PRODUCTION. He also appeared at the BREGENZER FESTSPIELE in Un Ballo in Maschera (Renato).

In the season of 1999-2000, Lado Ataneli sang at the following opera houses: DEUTSCHE OPER BERLIN: La Traviata (Padre Germont) NEW PRODUCTION, Tosca (Scarpia), Lucia di Lammermoor (Enrico), Macbeth (title part) REVIVAL, Un Ballo in Maschera (Renato), Madama Butterfly (Sharpless), Aida (Amonasro); HAMBURGISCHE STAATSOPER: La Forza del Destino (Don Carlo), Otello (Jago); GRAN TEATRE LISSABON: Un Ballo in Maschera (Renato) NEW PRODUCTION, OPÉRA NATIONAL DE PARIS: Nabucco (title part); GRAND TEATRO DEL LICEO BARCELONA: Un Ballo in Maschera (Renato) NEW PRODUCTION.

Lado Ataneli spent the season of 2000-2001 at the BAYERISCHE STAATSOPER: Tosca (Scarpia); WIENER STAATSOPER: Cavalleria Rusticana (Alfio) & I Pagliacci(Tonio); GRAND THEATRE DE GENEVE: Tosca (Scarpia) NEW PRODUCTION; DEUTSCHE OPER BERLIN: La Traviata (Padre Germont), Aida (Amonasro); CINCINNATI: Nabucco (title part), NEW PRODUCTION.

In the season of 2001-2002, Lado Ataneli returned to the following opera houses: WIENER STAATSOPER; Un Ballo in Maschera (Renato), Aida (Amonasro); OPÉRA NATIONAL DE PARIS; Rigoletto (title part); TEATRO CARLO FELICE DI GENOA; Samson et Dalila (Grand Prêtre de Dagon) NEW PRODUCTION; OPÉRA NATIONAL DE PARIS; Tosca (Scarpia); THEATRE ROYAL DE LA MONNAIE BRÜXELLES; Cavalleria Rusticana (Alfio) & I Pagliacci (Tonio) NEW PRODUCTION;

In 2002-2003, he returned to the WIENER STAATSOPER: Un Ballo in Maschera (Renato), Cavalleria Rusticana (Alfio) & I Pagliacci (Tonio) and Andrea Chenier (Carlo Gérard). Furthermore he made his debut at the METROPOLITAN OPERA NEW YORK; La Traviata (Padre Germont) and at the ROYAL OPERA HOUSE COVENT GARDEN LONDON: I Pagliacci (Tonio).

Lado Ataneli has worked with several international conductors, such as Riccardo Muti, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Marcello Viotti, Fabio Luisi, Ingo Metzmacher, Philippe Auguin, Leif Segerstam, Stefan Soltesz, Jan Latham König, Jiri Kout, Carlo Rizzi, James Conlon, Bertrand de Billy, Oleg Caetani...
