Trained at the great piano school of Maria Tipo, Andrea Lucchesini came to international attention at a very young age when he won the ‘Dino Ciani’ International Competition at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. Since then, he has played all over the world with prestigious orchestras and the greatest conductors, arousing the public’s enthusiasm for the combination of the solidity of formal structure in his performances, extreme care for sound, timbre refinement and natural communicative ability.
His wide-ranging activity, marked by a desire to explore music without limitations, sees him offer programmes ranging from the classical to the contemporary repertoire, performed both in concert and on numerous recordings, from youthful recordings for EMI (Liszt’s Sonata in B minor, Sonata op. 106 ‘Hammerklavier’ by Beethoven, Sonata op. 58 and Preludes op. 28 by Chopin) up to the much-celebrated live complete works of Beethoven’s 32 Sonatas (Stradivarius), while with Giuseppe Sinopoli and the Dresden Staatskapelle he recorded two 20th century masterpieces such as Arnold Schönberg’s Pierrot lunaire and Alban Berg’s Kammerkonzert for Teldec.
In recent years, Lucchesini has been enthusiastically immersing himself in the Schubertian repertoire, starting with the recording of the Improvvisi, on an AVIE Records CD that was received with international critical acclaim.
In 2018, the collaboration with the German label AUDITE began, for which the first disc of the project was released in 2018: “Dialogues” with music by Berio and Scarlatti, Schubert and Widmann, which was highly acclaimed by international critics, who awarded him numerous prizes. The second and third discs, Schubert Late Piano Works, have already been awarded 5 stars by major music magazines, including BBC Music Magazine, Fonoforum, Pizzicato, Ars Musique etc.
For BMG, he recorded Luciano Berio’s Concerto II “Echoing curves” under the direction of the composer: this recording marks one of the milestones of a close collaboration with Berio, alongside whom Lucchesini saw the birth of Sonata (the Italian composer’s last and most challenging work for solo piano), which was premiered in 2001 and subsequently delivered – with all of Berio’s other piano works – to an AVIE Records disc that quickly became a reference edition.
Another composer close to Lucchesini is Fabio Vacchi, whose new Piano Sonata dedicated to him was given its world premiere at the LAC in Lugano, and in May 2022 he presented a new Piano onata at Milano Musica, which was applauded by the critics present.
His engagements in 2022 include concerts with the Orchestra Mozart conducted by Daniele Gatti, concerts with the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale, first with Manfred Honeck conducting, and in September with Theodor Guschelbauer, and the American tour in spring 2023.
Convinced that passing on musical knowledge to the younger generations is a moral duty, Lucchesini is also passionately dedicated to teaching, currently at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole , where he was artistic director until 2016. He also holds frequent masterclasses at important Italian and European music institutions, including the Accademia di Musica in Pinerolo, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, and has been an Academician of S. Cecilia since 2008.
After serving as artistic director of the Accademia Filarmonica Romana from 2018 to 2021, he was recently appointed artistic director of the Amici della Musica di Firenze from the 2022-2023 season.
