Bujor Prelipcean

The violonist Bujor Prelipcean studied first in Galați, under the famous professor S. Nachmanovici, then at the George Enescu Conservatory in Iași, with the eminent teacher Gheorghe Sârbu. Gifted with an exceptional talent and with an enormous labour force, Bujor Prelipcean lived up to the fullest the advice that George Enescu permanently gave to youngsters – ”Let knowing oneself, work and self-control be the fundamental principles both in art and in life”. So it is that today, because of the success in his artistic and academic career, Bujor Prelipcean can be nominated as one of Romania’s most notable musical personalities.

Because of the fact that he was valedictorian on a national level, when he graduated from university in 1972 he was gived the position of assistant professor in the Department of Interpretation at the George Enescu Conservatory in Iași. Ever since his university years, Bujor Prelipcean showed an obvious passion for solo work, as well as for the chamber one, performing as a soloist in numerous recitals and concerts in Romania and abroad. In the spring of 1973 he founded the Voces String Quartet, which took multiple classed in both our and foreign countries, working in Romania under the guidance of Master Wilhelm Georg Berger, and abroad with professors Friederich von Hausegger, Uzi Wiesel, Vilmos Tatray, Amedeo Baldovino and with the members of the Amadeus Quartet. Thus, they managed to give life to the most longstanting and valuable string quartet in Romania’s musical history, currently having more than three decades of a high class artistic activity.

Since 1980, the Voces Quartet became a state subsidized ansamble, from 1990 becoming the Romanian Radio Society’s National Quartet in Bucharest. Leading the Voces Quartet, but also outside the chamber activity, Bujor Prelipcean performed countless solo pages of great technical and interpretative difficulty, which confirmed his quality as an authentic artist. The Voces Quartet was joined over the year by great international musical personalities such as: Martin Lovett, Mstislav Rostropovici, Wolfgang Laufer, Radu Aldulescu, Valentin Gheorghiu, Ştefan Metz, Luz Leskowitz, Fine Arts Quartet (US), Grigori Jîslin, Menahen Pressler, Karl Leister, Walther Seyfarth, Jeremy Menuhin etc. The Voces Quartet has a substantial business card, performing in concert halls like: Wigmore Hali in London, Conzertgebow in Amsterdam, Hercule Saal in Munchen, Mirabel Schloss in Salzburg, Hochschulle der Kunste Saal in Berlin etc., or in great cities such as Paris, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Roma, Milano, Torino, Madrid, Barcelona, Lisabona, Amsterdam, Copenhaga, Stockholm, Oslo etc. Among the more important festivals in which the took part are: George Enescu International Festival – Bucharest, Salzburg, Istambul, Torino, Avignon, KerKrade etc.

His rich artistic activity has been rewarded with countless distinctions, of which we selectively mention a few; the title of Onorary Citizen of the Iași Municipality, George Enescu International Festival’s Honorary Degree, Bucharest 1998 and The National Order of Merit, the Knight rank, for special merits in promoting the Romanian culture in our country and abroad. Aside from his interpretative activity, Bujor Prelipcean has a rich pedagogical activity: professor at the George Enescu University of Arts in Iași, honorary professor at the Gh. Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca, honorary professor at the Music Academy in Wurzburg, Germany, also lecturing master classes at the Netherlands StringQuartet Academy in Amsterdam. Being a notable personality of both Romania’s and the world’s music life, over time, Bujor Prelipcean had various public functions, including General Director of the Moldova Philharmonic in Iași, between 1984 and 1988 and then since 1999.
