“This pure-blood musician” (Die Rheinpfalz) whose “boundless virtuosity and force of interpretation are entwined with delicate sensitivity and deep spirituality” (Münchner Merkur), soloist in residence at the Orchestras and Choruses of the Romanian Broadcasting Corporation (2000-2018) and at the Oradea Philharmonic Orchestra (1981-1990), rounded off in 2006 a unique project in Romania – the W. A. Mozart’s Complete Concertos for Piano and Orchestra, performed in concerts with the Radio Chamber Orchestra, as well as recorded on an album including 8 CDs.
Born in Cluj, a graduate of the Music Conservatory of Bucharest (today’s National University of Music) and a Universität der Künste Berlin scholar, she studied with maestros Gabriel Amiraș (disciple of great Heinrich Neuhaus), Georg Sava and Peter Florian, as well as under the guidance of Hans Leygraf, Hélène Boschi, and Dmitri Bashkirov.
The 2nd prize at the prestigious International Robert Schumann Competition (Zwickau), which she was awarded at the age of 19, propelled her onto the international concert stages.
For 45 years, the artist’s name constantly headlined concerts in 17 countries and the programmes of well-known festivals (Enescu – Bucharest, Schumann – Zwickau, Potsdam, Faenza, Aberdeen, Kishinev, Lipatti – Bucharest, Mozart – Cluj).
Her over 900 concerts and recitals, 14 CD and 2 LP recordings for Casa Radio, KU Classics, Eterna, Electrecord, with pieces by Schumann and concertos by Chopin, Liszt, Mozart, Hanns Wolf, Moszkowski, Chausson, and her collaborations with famous conductors (Cristian Măcelaru, Vladimir Uryupin, Julien Salemkour, Sascha Goetzel, Sébastien Rouland, Jochen Wehner, David Crescenzi, Emil Tabakov, Horia Andreescu, Manfred Ramin, Christoph Adt, Dejan Savić, Alexis Hauser, Cristian Mandeal, Daisuke Soga, Jin Wang, Ludovic Bacs, etc.) map Dana Borșan’s concert pianist career.
Her repertoire, including 50 concertos and appealing recital programmes, substantiates the artist’s affinity for the creations pertaining to the Viennese classicism and of the great Romantics, as well as her interest in breaking new ground with novel works, old rediscovered pieces, even first auditions.
Dana Borșan is prizewinner of the music critique in Romania (1991, 1998, 2006), of the Union of Musical Interpreters (UNIMIR, 2019), and holds the Cultural Order rank of Knight (2011) handed out by the President of Romania. She has also gained much recognition as a pedagogue in the intense teaching activity in which she has been engaged as a Professor, PhD. at the National Music University of Bucharest (since 1990).
Numerous of her former students, disciples of hers, are prizewinners of international competitions, have cut high-profile figures in concerts, and are well accomplished academics.
Dana Borșan has been a guest professor, under the ERASMUS Programme, at the Universities (Music Conservatories) in Vienna, Paris, Stuttgart, Weimar, Oslo, Cork, Nürnberg, has given master classes in Essen, Wuppertal, Stuttgart, Catania, and has been sought after as jury member in the international competitions in Oslo (Grieg), Hong Kong, Guérande (French music), Bucharest (Enescu, Lipatti, Jeunesse), Cluj (Mozart).
