Enescu and his contemporaries

This is the series that leads its listeners in the intimate universe of chamber music. Organized in the form of weekend musical matinees, the concerts and recitals take place on Saturdays and Sundays at 11:00, at the Auditorium Hall of the National Museum of Art of Romania.

The existence of Enescu and his Contemporaries series is based on at least two reasons. On the one hand, it aims to complete the Festival Program with this important chamber component. But above all, it seeks to respond to an increasingly obvious need in recent decades, to perceive Enescu within the stylistic kaleidoscope of European modernity. Beyond the nationalist enthusiasm present in many of the writings of the communist period, George Enescu's music must be regarded and appreciated in the refined context of a stylistic intertwining, in which French, German, Austrian and Romanian sounds and influences are combined. The George Enescu Festival aims to contribute to the realization of this ideal.

Prestigious chamber ensembles, including the Danel Quartet, the Fine Arts Quartet and the Clara Haskil Trio, and musicians such as cellist Manuel Fischer-Dieskau, pianists Sina Kloke and Lauren Zhang, who will perform in recitals, present the Enescu's music along with the creations that surrounded and inspired him in this stylistic landscape of the first half of the 20th century. The audience will have the opportunity to listen to works by Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinsky and Dmitri Shostakovich, George Enescu and Béla Bartók, sound testimonies of mutual influences and admirations that have made a relevant contribution to defining the individual styles and destinies of European music of the 20th century.
