Hansjörg Albrecht

Hansjörg Albrecht is one of the few artists – along with Ton Koopman, Masaaki Suzuki, Martin Haselböck and Wayne Marshall – who are regularly present internationally both as conductor and concert organist. He is regarded as a musical border crosser without fear of contact – entirely in the spirit of the Anglo-American conductor, concert organist, arranger and sound magician Leopold Stokowski. As a conductor, Albrecht consistently goes his own way – between archive and new creation and with an extensive repertoire from Bach to Messiaen – and with his organ transcriptions he established himself as a specialist among the virtuosos of his instrument.

Albrecht is Artistic Director of the Munich Bach Choir & Bach Orchestra. He has also worked for many years with the San Carlo Opera House in Naples, the Chamber Orchestra Moscow, the Staatskapelle Weimar and the CPE Bach Choir Hamburg, among others. He performs worldwide as conductor and organist in major music centers such as London, Paris, Vienna, Berlin, Prague, Rome, Moscow, Tokyo and New York, regularly collaborating with internationally renowned artists and orchestras. He also conducts opera productions in Naples and Dubai, among other places, as well as ballet projects with the dance companies of Marguerite Donlon and Boris Eifman.

Engagements take him to concert halls in Dresden and Leipzig, Hamburg’s Laieszhalle and Elbphilharmonie, cathedrals of Paris, Chartres and London, the Organ Park Amsterdam, the opera houses of Bari, Brno and Muscat (Oman), the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall Moscow, to festivals in Ekaterinburg, La Valletta, Pisa, Ljubljana and Toblach, to Colombia and China as well as repeatedly to Japan. He is currently working for the first time with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, Staatskapelle Halle, Slovenian National Orchestra Ljubljana, Orchestra of the Teatro Petruzzelli Bari, Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Oman Symphonic Orchestra.

While Hansjörg Albrecht is internationally recognized as a specialist in historically informed performance, especially of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and the Viennese Classical period, he is equally pleased to be invited to perform major choral symphonic works in particular, as well as premieres and first performances. He is also passionately devoted to a Richard Wagner pèlerinage and champions forgotten composers such as Hans Rott and Walter Braunfels.

Albrecht regularly gives international master classes and led the oratorio class at the Mozarteum Salzburg from 2016-2021.

On the Oehms Classics label, he has released over 25 highly acclaimed CDs as a conductor and organist. Among others, he was nominated for the GRAMMY Award and for the ” Prize of the German Record Critics” with his live recording of Wagner’s ” The Ring without Words” (with the Staatskapelle Weimar). In 2020, he began the recording of all Bruckner symphonies as organ transcriptions – combined with new “Bruckner windows” by renowned contemporary composers. Until 2024, Bruckner’s 200th birthday, he is recording this mammoth project at original locations such as St. Florian, Linz, Vienna, Lucerne, Munich, Leipzig, Paris and London. At the same time, he is initiating a book and a documentary film about Bruckner.
