Joel Munday was born in Wiltshire, England, in 1999. Following eight years of study with Prof. Michael Johnson, he commenced studies with Prof. Ani Schnarch in 2016. He is currently in his fourth year of undergraduate studies at the Royal College of Music, where he holds a scholarship to study with Prof. Schnarch.
Joel won the 1st prize at the Royal College of Music Concerto Competition (2017), 1st prize at the Two Moors Festival (2016), 3rd prize at Whitgift International Music Competition (2017), String Prize at the Gregynog Young Musician Competition (2018) and Sponsors Award at the Piła Festival and Academy (2021).
He has performed internationally as soloist, chamber musician and with orchestra, including in the UK, the Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, the Philippines, India, Canada and the USA. In 2017, he made his concerto debut playing Korngold’s Violin Concerto with the Royal College of Music Junior Department Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jacques Cohen. He was appointed Festival Artist for the Two Moors Festival the same year. He has appeared as soloist with numerous UK-based orchestras and performs chamber music regularly with soloists of the young generation, including Lucas Krupinski, Julian Trevelyan and Thomas Kelly.
Participating in festivals and masterclasses including Keshet Eilon Mastercourse, Bowdoin International Music Festival, New Virtuosi Mastercourse, Friends International Violin Academy, ISA University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, Erben Geigenbau Masterclasses Munich, and Piła Music Festival Poland, Joel has been mentored by pedagogues and soloists such as Vadim Gluzman, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Hagai Shaham, Ilya Kaler, Lewis Kaplan and Joel Smirnoff.
He has received awards and scholarships from various British institutions, including the Royal College of Music, Awards for Young Musicians and the Joanna Leach Foundation. Joel plays a violin made in 1832 by Bernard Simon Fendt, Jr. on private loan.He is represented by Mr Roger Hendy, and is grateful to the support of Talent Unlimited and the Joanna Leach Foundation.
