Mihai Ungureanu

The pianist MIHAI UNGUREANU made his debut when he was 16 years old with Piano Concert No. 1 by Franz Liszt on stage and with Craiova Philharmonic. After graduating from Craiova Art School, he studied at the Bucharest Academy of Music with Dan Grigore and Ioana Minei.

Since 1981 he has been performing intensively together with all the symphonic orchestras in Romania..

As a soloist and chamber musician, he has performed throughout Europe, North and South America, the former USSR and Asia.

He is prize winner of several national competitions, and in 1986 he received the Romanian Music Critics Award.

He has been for many years General Manager, Artistic Director, and currently he is a concert soloist of the Craiova Philharmonic.

The pianist has a rich repertoire, both in piano concerts and chamber music – sonatas, trios, quartets, piano quintets.

Mihai UNGUREANU made valuable recordings at the Electrecord Bucharest – George Enescu – 3rd Sonata  “In Popular Romanian Folk Character ” together with the violinist Luminitza Petre; at House Edipan Records Italy, GalloV.D.-Switzerland; Bella Musica Freiburg Germany; Hastedt WDR 3 CD with a Portrait Pascal Bentoiu with Violinist Jenny Abel, Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonic, and others. In 2004 he recorded a CD with Pascal Bentoiu’s Romanian music in Cologne with West Deutscher Rundfunk under the baton of Horia Andreescu, performing the No.2 Concerto for the piano and Sonata for the violin and the piano.

In the same year, he performed in a tour of several cities in southern Japan, playing  chamber and piano music recitals.

Throughout his career, Mihai Ungureanu has coordinated master classes in the USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Italy, France, Germany, Greece and the Republic of Moldova, being frequently invited to participate in juries of international competitions such as Viotti-Valsesia , Citta di Cantú-Como, Franz Schubert -Italia.

In Baden-Baden, on the occasion of the 50th commemoration of the great conductor and composer Wilhelm Furtwängler, Mihai Ungureanu interpreted his Sonata No. 1 for violin and piano in a concert broadcast live by Radio Stuttgart.
