Audience members can attend events with just their tickets, wearing a face mask and keeping physical distancing
Starting Friday, May 14, classical music lovers are invited to the Athenaeum, where they can attend live concerts and recitals in 2020/2021 Enescu Competition based on tickets solely, provided they wear a face mask and maintain the required physical distance, in line with the latest Decision of the Committee for Emergency Situations of the City of Bucharest, dated May 13, 2021.
According to this Decision, it is no longer mandatory that audience members present their identity document, the official proof of vaccination, a negative PCR test result taken within the previous 72 hours, or a positive test result for antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 because the number of seats to be occupied will not exceed 50% of the hall capacity.
The Decision is effective as of Friday evening’s recital, given by cellist Marcel Johannes Kits, laureate of the 2018 George Enescu Competition, accompanied by pianist Sten Henoja. The duo presents a program with works by Brahms, Piazolla, Beethoven, and Erkki-Sven Tüür. Details here.
On Saturday, May 15, will take place the Cello Final of the Enescu Competition, where each of the three finalists will perform a concerto with the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of renowned conductor Nicolas Altstaedt. The three finalists are Stefan Cazacu (Romania), Sebastian Fritsch (Germany), and Jaemin Han (South Korea). The evening’s program is published here.
The 2020 George Enescu International Competition has seen its first phase unfold last year, fulfilling the promise to bring Beauty in Life despite the pandemic. The Competition reinvented itself online, marking a premiere in the world of international classical music – the first two rounds were held virtually, to allow the Competition to take place and defy the pandemic.
In 2020 the George Enescu International Competition offered much more than music and competition. The message of this edition is Beauty in Life and, in the context of the pandemic, the Enescu Competition has set out to prove that we all have the power to reinvent ourselves, while equally embracing beauty and life. In a troubled world, silenced and isolated by the pandemic, we have created a model of resilience based on our longing for beauty in life, vital to our shared humanity.

George Enescu Competition is an international platform for launching future world-class musicians and for promoting the compositions of the great Romanian composer to the new generation of artists from all over the world. It is thus a natural extension of the George Enescu Festival, the most important cultural event organized in Romania. The Competition has four sections – violin, cello, piano, and composition – and it ranks in the top five classical music competitions worldwide.
