STATE ACADEMIC SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA OF RUSSIA “EVGENY SVETLANOV”

In 2016, the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia “Evgeny Svetlanov” celebrated its 80th anniversary. During the years, the orchestra has been led by outstanding musicians such as Alexander Gauk, Natan Rakhlin, Konstantin Ivanov, and Evgeny Svetlanov. Under the leadership of Svetlanov, the orchestra became one of the best symphony institutions of the world. In 2005, the orchestra was named after the conductor. In 2011, the world famous musician Vladimir Jurowski was appointed as the Artistic Director of the orchestra. Since 2016/17 season, Vasily Petrenko has been the Principal Guest Conductor of the orchestra.

The orchestra performed at the concert venues in many countries, including the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall (Moscow), Carnegie Hall (New York), Musikverein (Vienna), the Royal Albert Hall (London).

The orchestra was conducted by E. Mravinsky, G. Rozhdestvensky, M. Rostropovich, I. Stravinsky, V. Gergiev and other outstanding conductors. Among the famous musicians who performed with the orchestra were singers G. Vishnevskaya, E. Obraztsova, D. Hvorostovsky, P. Domingo, M. Caballe, and A. Netrebko; pianists E. Gilels, V. Cliburn, S. Richter, B. Berezovsky, and D. Matsuev; violists Y. Menuhin, D. Oistrakh, M. Vengerov, and V. Spivakov; violist Y. Bashmet; cellist M. Rostropovich.

Since its first tour abroad in 1956, the orchestra has represented Russian art in Australia, Canada, Mexico, the USA, France, Switzerland, Japan and many other countries.

The orchestra’s discography includes hundreds of vinyl records and CDs released by the leading labels. Audio recordings of the orchestra concerts are made by the channels Medici, Mezzo, Rossiya 1, Kultura.

The orchestra has performed at the Mstislav Rostropovich Festival in Moscow, the Arts’ Square in Saint Petersburg; taken part in the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition and visited cities in Russia, Austria, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Germany, Spain, Turkey and China.
