“Carol I” Central University Library

Bucharest

“Carol I” Central University Library is one of the most important institutions in our cultural and academic world, with an essential role in Romania’s process of modernisation. Founded in 1891 by King Carol I as a University Foundation, the institution had a visionary programme: a combination between a library and halls for conferences and events.

“Carol I” University Foundation was officially re-established on 4 April 2012, after over 65 years of non-existence – fundatiacarol.ro. The purpose of the organisation is to continue the initial objectives undertaken by “Carol I” University Foundation, by supporting our national culture through educational programmes aiming to promote authentic values.

The Foundation has run an excellence scholarship programme aimed to help young Master’s students with great results, and it has supported the first five editions of the Strada de C’Arte Festival.

The Strada de C’Arte Festival is

  • one of the largest and most interactive outdoor cultural festivals in Bucharest, already at its 6th edition
  • organised by “Carol I” Central University Library in partnership with “Carol I” University Foundation
  • a multicultural, innovative, unconventional place for interactive cultural education
  • an attractive cultural urban room: books, painting, drawing, jazz and blues concerts, live music, relaxation areas, reading and poetry sessions, debates, art and stamp exhibitions
  • an occasion to introduce visitors into the seductive atmosphere generated by the show of culture

In our busy capital city, each of us should have the choice to:

  • read more than the texts on billboards

which is why we have an event dedicated to Books

  • listen to more than the noise of car horns in the streets

which is why we have a Jazz and Poetry Runway

  • expose children and young people to more than “backstreet culture”

which is why we have a platform for Creation and Debates workshops

The project includes:

  • Strada de Carte  the biggest publishing houses and bookstores; debates

(THE AREA OF THE EQUESTRIAN STATUE of King Carol I)

  • Children’s Street  painting, drawing, clay modelling workshops, exhibitions for children

(THE AREA OF THE EQUESTRIAN STATUE of King Carol I)

  • Jazz and Poetry Runway → music and literature show
  • Reading Room → poetry recitals and book launches
  • Library Hall → theatre, concerts, film and documentary screenings
  • In the Library → guided tours, a book exhibition
