Born in Fairbanks, Alaska, mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux is the recipient of the 2019 Hasse-Preis and the 2017 Händel-Preis. Her career has taken her to many of the world’s most prestigious venues, including New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Opéra Garnier in Paris, and Wiener Staatsoper.
Vivica began 2019 with concerts with Concerto de’ Cavalieri in Antwerp and Valletta and a concert with La magnifica comunità in Verona. February 2019 found her in Poissy and Bilbao for performances with Les Musiciens du Louvre and in Karlsruhe for a gala performance.
In April 2019, she débuted as Emma in Rossini’s Zelmira with Washington Concert Opera before traveling to Madrid for a Farinelli programme. On 29 April, she performed at the International Opera Awards ceremony in London.
In May 2019, Vivica and Bach Consort Wien were heard in Vienna’s Musikverein. Gender Stories débuted in Dortmund and Halle and will be reprised in Olten, Switzerland, in December. In June, she sang in a gala concert at Salzburger Pfingstfestspiele, followed by a performance with NY Baroque Incorporated. She sings Trasimede in Riccardo Broschi’s Merope at the Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik in August, before joining Europa Galante in September for Händel’s Lucio Cornelio Silla at Romania’s Enescu Festival.
Vivica figures prominently in Theater an der Wien’s 2019 – 2020 Season, participating in performances of Broschi’s Merope, Händel’s Rodrigo, and Hasse’s Irene.
Vivica’s engagements in 2018 included performances of Vivica & Viardot and concerts in Europe, Asia, Mexico, and the USA. Revisiting Händel’s operas, she interpreted the title rôle in Rodrigo and Arsamene in Serse. In December 2018, she débuted as Mandane in Hasse’s Artaserse with Australia’s Pinchgut Opera.
Vivica’s operatic repertoire encompasses more than sixty rôles. Celebrated for her interpretations of Baroque and bel canto music, she has garnered praise for her bravura technique and dramatic intensity.
