Zhiyu Zhang

Zhiyu Zhang was born in January 2003 in Shanghai, China. She started studying cello at the age of 6 with Prof. Dahai Liu at the Music Middle School Affiliated to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She was admitted at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna in 2017, where she began her bachelor studies under the guidance of Prof. Reinhard Latzko.

Zhiyu won the 1st prize at the 17th Spain Villa de Llanes International Cello Competition, as the youngest player to be invited to Spain for three personal recitals in different cities, and also at the 2021 Gustav Mahler Competition.

Zhiyu has collaborated four times with conductor Muhai Tang and the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Joseph Haydn Cello Concerto No. l, Camille Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. l and Edward Elgar Cello Concerto in E minor, at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center and Shanghai Concert Hall. She performed the Cello Concerto No. 2 by Joseph Haydn with the Hamburger Camerata in the St. Johannis-Harvestehude Church, in 2019.

She has participated in the masterclasses of Arto Noras, Mischa Maisky, Miklós Perényi, Jens Peter Maintz, and Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt.
