Adrian Iorgulescu

Adrian Iorgulescu was born on July 6, 1951 in Bucharest. He attended the National College Dinu Lipatti and the Academy of Music in Bucharest – composition section, then pursued an MA at the same institution. In 1990 he was awarded a PhD in musicology. The same year he became professor of composition and musical forms at the University of Music in Bucharest, and in 1994 a doctorate leader.

He was elected Vice President of the Union of Composers and Musicologists of Romania in the timespan 1990-1992, then President for several terms, until now. In parallel, he was also the Chair of the National Alliance of the Creators Unions and the President of the Romanian Musical Performing and Mechanical Rights Society (ADA).

In addition to creative and academic concerns, Adrian Iorgulescu was noted as a politician too. He was elected to the Parliament of Romania in the 1996-2000 legislature, where he served as a member of the Committee for Culture and Media of the Chamber of Deputies. Between 2005 and 2008 he served as Minister of Culture and Religious Affairs.

Adrian Iorgulescu has authored numerous musical works. These include 4 symphonies, 4 instrumental concertos, 4 string quartets, 3 cycles of songs, symphonic, chamber and choral works, film music and the opera Revolution, on the text of the playwright Ion Luca Caragiale. These were presented in concert halls in Europe, Canada and the USA.

He also wrote studies on musicology and aesthetics, that appeared in cultural journals and newspapers of general circulation. He published the following books as well: Timpul Muzical – Materie și Metaforă [Musical time: matter and metaphor] – 1988, Timpul și Comunicarea Muzicală [Time and Musical Communication] – 1991, Estetica [Aesthetics] – 1996 and Dreapta, Principii și Perspective [Right, Principles and Perspectives] – 2000 on political theory, the volume of poetry Aripa Evei [Eve’s Wing] – 2005 and the essay volume Dezacorduri [(Dis)Agreements] – 2010.

For his contribution in the artistic field Adrian Iorgulescu has received many national and international awards.
