Comic Opera for Children

The Comic Opera for Children began its activity in 1998, when it was launched as an independent opera company. The hefty number of titles produced in record time by the institution established it as an unique and original „voice” in the Romanian artistical environment, and even internationally. It is the only public institution in the world that synthesizes the cultural, artistic, and educational preoccupations and has shows especially designed for the young audiences. Since 2003, the Comic Opera for Children is a public institution under direction of the Bucharest City Hall.

At the beginning of its activity (1998), it had 12 plays/year, in 2003 there were 200 plays/year (including summer shows and tours), and the estimate for 2014-2017 is 230/250 shows yearly, including the regular season, festivals, summer shows and tours.

The institution’s headquarters (Calea Giulești nr. 16, sector 6, București) has two performance halls – The Great Hall, which has 424 seats and the White Foyer, in capacity of 120 seats. Here, both established players and young talents of the Romanian scene have performed. What is more, the Comic Opera for Children acts as a debut scene for students graduating musical education. Here, they can express their creativity, talent and understanding of the performing arts (regardless if they are soloists, instrument players, scenography artists, directors or choreographers). Monthly, around 6000 children visit us, and we’re expecting the number to increase as we are present online as well, at www.operacomica.ro
