Tomorrow, 6 March, at 12.00 PM, individual tickets go on sale for the George Enescu International Festival, 2019 edition.
A total number of 84 concerts in four halls, 2,500 international artists, over 50 outstanding soloists, lyrical artists, violinists, pianists, over 170 hours of music of the highest quality, a varied repertoire covering monumental works, highly popular compositions, as well as smaller recitals, contemporary music and even first listens.
The artistic orientation of the Festival will be preserved: diverse experiences in a well-dosed blend, so that each music lover can find something that matches their own passion and interests.
The 2019 edition of the George Enescu International Festival brings a lot of novelties, new approaches and over 40 great artists and orchestras coming to Romania for the very first time, on the one hand, and continues the direction of great performances and scenic presences, on the other hand.
Tickets will be sold online on www.eventim.ro, as well as in the network of Eventim stores (Telekom, Orange, Vodafone, Diverta, Humanitas and Cărturești bookshops, Carrefour and OMV stations) and in the Eventim offices in Bucharest (Bdul I.C.Brătianu, Nr. 6 in Cinema PRO) and Cluj-Napoca (Str. Alexandru Vaida-Voevod, Nr. 53 B in Iulius Mall), UPC cashier’s offices in Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca.
Great Orchestras of the World
The series include the presence of world-class orchestras, great in terms of renown and also in terms of the number of musicians, under the baton of famous, appreciated conductors. Many concerts will be joined by equally extraordinary soloists and interpreters.
For those who dare to approach the charts in this area (so difficult to rank, in fact), you will find renowned orchestras listed by various specialist publications as some of the world’s 10 best ones. Berliner Philharmoniker, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Staatskapelle Dresden, St. Petersburg Orchestra, joining the extraordinary Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Orchestre National de France, the Orchestra and Choir Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Russian State Academic Orchestra „Evgeny Svetlanov” and, of course, “George Enescu” Philharmonic Orchestra.
Each of these will collaborate with soloists for their performances, in the case of piano and violin concerts, and operas in concert version. The pianists Yuja Wang, Denis Matsuev, Evgeny Kissin, Alexandra Dariescu, the violinists Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Ray Chen, Sergei Krylov are some of the world‑renowned soloists who will give concerts at the Palace Hall.
For those who seek to immerse themselves in the strength of performances, who appreciate the intensity of large orchestras, who look for a familiar, popular repertoire, the concerts at the Palace Hall may be their first option. The repertoire mostly covers the classical and contemporary areas, but it also contains compositions at their first listen in Romania and a few operas in concert version.
Recitals and Chamber Music
These series include great artists and internationally-renowned orchestras that propose smaller‑scale formulas on stage. Here you will find recitals of soloists who will perform with chamber ensembles or on their own.
Cameristi della Scala, Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, Camerata Salzburg, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Kremerata Baltica, Orchestre National de Lille are just some of the ensembles that will be present in these series. Elisabeth Leonskaja, Mitsuko Uchida, Charles Richard Hamelin, Julia Fischer, David Grimal, lyrical artists Rolando Villazón, Sir Bryn Terfel, Joyce DiDonato, Diana Damrau are some of the world-class artists that can be admired in these series. As an exceptional note, actress Marion Cotillard will be present in concert, with the Lille National Orchestra, in the role of Jeanne d’Arc.
The listener’s experience is just as overwhelming as in any of the other series, the stage formula is smaller, and the repertoire goes beyond very popular works, although it includes many such compositions. The chances to find lesser-known works, starting from the pre-classical period, sometimes from the “old music” segment, up to the contemporary period, are higher in these series. Moreover, the recital experience is more intimate and more focused on the art of performing and on the personality of the soloists.
By Midnight Concerts
In this group of concerts you will be able to listen to chamber orchestras with special approaches, either by their repertoire, or by their concert formula. La Cetra D’Orfeo, Europa Galante, the 12 cellists of Berliner Philharmoniker, Orchestra of The Age of Enlightenment, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and Choir are just some of the names you will listen to in the midnight series at the Athenaeum.
The music of the XXIst century, pre-classical works, blues and philharmonic rumba, 18th century opera composed by Handel, along with Leonora and Missa Solemnis, works by Ludwig van Beethoven, in surprising combinations, musical jewels, and interesting approaches.
The listeners’ experience in the By Midnight Concerts series has an extra dimension, of a tiny mystery at night. The repertoire focuses on compositions played more rarely, the stage formulas include the possibility of experiments and new accents in the performances.
Music of the 21st Century
Concerts that include compositions by contemporary authors, renowned works and first listens. Refined orchestras, including Ensemble Linea, Britten Sinfonia, New European Ensemble together with the experienced “George Enescu” Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Camerata or the Philharmonic Orchestras of Sibiu, Bacău and Târgu Mureș approach works with contemporary sonorities in valuable, mature interpretations.
These series also include exceptional young soloists, such as the laureate of the violin section of the “George Enescu” International Competition, 2018 edition, Vikram Sedona, Yibai Chen, laureate of the cello section of the Enescu Competition in the same year, Ziyu He, winner of the violin section of the “Menuhin” International Competition in 2017.
The experience provided by this section is that of “instantaneity” in the current moment. It offers direct contact with famous works by contemporary composers, real-time contact and dialogue with them, and a special connection with the orchestra and the artists. For music lovers, the future is written at the Radio Hall.
The Festival in the country
The 2019 edition of the George Enescu International Festival will be held in several cities in Romania. Sibiu, Cluj, Timișoara, Iași, Bacău, Târgu Mureș, Târgoviște are the cities where the audience will have the chance to meet international artists in concert with local ensembles and orchestras, under the aegis of the festival. The tickets for these shows will be purchased locally or, for the events in Cluj and Sibiu, on www.eventim.ro and through other partners. The relevant announcements will be made in the upcoming period.
Special events and related programmes
The Festival will include special events like Mozart Week in Residence, a series of shows brought from Salzburg, which proposes a novel foray into the works of Mozart, an exceptional combination of artistic means, which maintains the contemporaneity of the great composer’s body of work.
