Silke Gäng, mezzo-soprano, grew up in Freiburg/Germany and studied singing at the Hochschule für Musik in Basel/Switzerland. Since graduating in 2010 she has won various international awards, including the International Ernst Haefliger Competition in 2014, and has embarked on an international career with a special interest in Baroque Opera. She has had the honour to work with artists such as Graham Johnson, Thomas Hampson, Brigitte Fassbaender, Anne Sofie von Otter and Wolfram Rieger. Highlights from recent years include performances at the Salzburg Festival and Staatstheater Stuttgart (Judith), Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Handel Festival in Halle, Schwetzingen Festival (Parnasso in Festa), Liederhalle Stuttgart (Messiah), Theater Basel (Dido and Aeneas, The fairy queen), Theater Freiburg and the Royal Theatre of Norwich (Parsifal), among others.
In 2016/17, Silke Gäng made her debut at Carnegie Hall NY with the Venice Baroque Orchestra under the direction of Andrea Marcon, singing Abra in Vivaldi’s Juditha Triumphans, with concerts also in London (Barbican) and Brussels (Palais de Beaux Arts). She also sang the title role of Juditha Triumphans and Nérine in Charpentiers Médée at Theatre Basel. More recently she was part of a new production of Monteverdi’s Orfeo (Messagiera and Proserpina), was a guest at the Festival Wissembourg/France and gave her début with Kammerorchester Basel.
In 2015, she made her début with a song recital at Lucerne Festival.
She is founder and artistic director of LIEDBasel, an international festival for Lied, which combines Lied with questions of life, science and education.
Silke Gäng has worked with, among others, conductors Andrea Marcon, Ton Koopman, Jürg Halubek and Fabrice Bollon and has participated in numerous recordings. Her role in Il Giustino marks her début in the Vivaldi Edition.
