Italian violinist Salvatore Accardo, acclaimed for his Paganini interpretations, Swedish pianist Peter Jablonski – whose talent was acknowledged by jazz legend Miles Davis himself – and renowned British cellist Raphael Wallfisch, with a discography of over 70 recordings, go on the stage of the Romanian Athenaeum to give extraordinary recitals at 2018 George Enescu Competition. 2018 edition of the George Enescu International Competition (1-23 September, Bucharest) will bring a series of exceptional recitals to the audience, with three established musicians, acclaimed on great stages of the world – also members of the international jury of this edition of the competition.
The recording of Antonín Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor with Raphael Wallfisch as a soloist is considered, according to a BBC survey, the best interpretation in the past 25 years. With an impressive activity, the British cellist has 70 recordings in his own discography and is also one of the most popular cellists for performing and creating contemporary music works. Raphael Wallfisch has collaborated with a series of famous contemporary composers: Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Kenneth Leighton, James MacMillan, Rodion Schedrin and John Tavener.
Raphael Wallfisch goes on stage at the Grand Hall of the Romanian Athenaeum on 5 September and proposes a challenging programme for his recital: works by Kenneth Leighton, Alexander Zemlinsky, Sir James MacMillan and Guillaume Lekeu. He will be accompanied by John York at the piano.
The violinist who conquered the world with his interpretations of Paganini’s works, Salvatore Accardo, brings to the audience works by Mozart, Schubert, Enescu and Saint-Saëns on 14 September, starting 7.00 p.m. He will be accompanied by Laura Manzini at the piano. With over 50 recordings, Italian violinist Salvatore Accardo is also renowned as the first musician to have ever recorded Paganini’s complete violin concertos, namely six.

Also famous for his jazz interpretations, Peter Jablonski was praised by Miles Davis himself and played with two other legends, Buddy Rich and Thad Jones, in the renowned jazz club Village Vanguard in New York. As a classical pianist, Jablonski was acclaimed by Claudio Abbado, while Vladimir Ashkenazy recognised his talent early on, became his mentor and supported his career. Peter Jablonski has performed with some of the most important ensembles of the world: La Scala, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, NHK Tokyo, Warsaw Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic and Cleveland Orchestra.
Pianist Peter Jablonski’s recital is scheduled for 22 September and will include works by Alexei Stanchinsky, Grieg, Scriabin, Chopin, Samuel Barber and Copland/Bernstein – the well-known “El Salon Mexico”.

Organised as a stand-alone event since the 2014 edition, “George Enescu” International Competition invites the audience to discover some of the most talented young artists today, great names of tomorrow’s classical music, and to follow and support their journey to the top: winning the competition. A total number of 270 young musicians from 39 countries, including 22 artists from Romania and the Republic of Moldova, will compete for the trophy of the 2018 edition in one of the four sections – Composition, Violin, Cello and Piano – 60 years after the first edition of the Competition.
